UNPRECEDENTED COLLAPSE OF OIL PRICE: STATEMENT

Tuesday 21st April, 2020, Earth - On Monday, the cost of a barrel of oil fell to $30 below zero, the first time oil prices have ever gone negative. 

“This is the moment to nail the coffin lid shut on an industry that is pro-extinction. The fossil fuel companies have actively and knowingly destroyed life on Earth for too long. Their criminal behavior is ruining any chance of handing over a livable world to our children. The idea that we should bail out an industry that has killed and polluted is preposterous. ”

“Rather than bail out these merchants of death, we must use this unprecedented moment in time to listen to what the science is saying. Global heating and the destruction of the natural world is endangering all life on Earth. To halt the mass extinction underway today and to prevent societal destabilization, we must rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025. The oil industry has stood in the way of life for too long. It is time to end its dirty, polluting, life-destroying ways.”

“To the dirty, fossil fuel-financing banks who are about to buy up stranded oil and turn a profit as soon as the COVID-19 emergency ends, we say this: your criminal actions are loading the dice even further in favour of extinction and societal implosion. You are directly responsible for the destruction of life on Earth. History will judge your actions as criminal. We already do.”
