Roger Hallam Announces US Book Tour, Intends to Tell The Truth to Inspire Mass Mobilization: “Hell Is on the Way”
The controversial British activist and author Roger Hallam will be coming to America to speak on Common Sense for the 21st Century, his modern-day call to mass rebellion.
Thomas Paine wrote Common Sense in 1776, helping to spark the American Revolution. Now, Roger Hallam, one of the founders of the international movement Extinction Rebellion, has written his Common Sense for the 21st Century to spark a rebellion against the world’s governments for failing to tackle the climate and ecological emergency.
Paine’s pamphlet laid the responsibility for American discontent not on Britain’s ministers nor its parliament, but squarely upon King George III. Similarly, Hallam argues that our ongoing failure to address the climate and ecological crisis, which threatens human civilization with collapse, does not lie with individuals, but with the world’s governments, which are allowing corporations and financial institutions to destroy the Earth.
Hallam’s warning holds nothing back: “Life as we know it is over. Hell is on the way, and the only half-decent thing to do now is to rebel against the governments that are planning the death of our children. What scientists have told us endlessly for 30 years is now coming true. Climate breakdown is now everywhere – we face social collapse, war and starvation… and extinction. Everyone has a stake in the future, and we have a duty to protect it for our children and ourselves.”
Hallam is one of the co-founders of Extinction Rebellion UK, which has inspired one of the most influential climate and ecological movements of our time. Since its birth less than two years ago, Extinction Rebellion has spread to more than 70 countries and over 750 cities. It has engaged in numerous successful actions, many of which have garnered prominent international media coverage. The movement is grounded in the principles of nonviolent civil disobedience. Extinction Rebellion is decentralized and actively encourages autonomous action. It welcomes a multitude of people from different backgrounds and perspectives.
Although Hallam’s language may sound inflammatory, it is based on real climate and ecological scenarios presented by the scientific community. His intent has been to strip away the jargon which usually obstructs healthy discussion of the emergency and to state clearly the reality we face. We echo his call for all to become engaged, no matter one’s experience, knowledge or individual situation.
Hallam will be embarking on his American book tour from March 2nd through 16th, making stops in cities across the country, including Troy, New York; New York City; Washington, D.C.; Kansas City; and Los Angeles. More details of the tour can be found here. .
Extinction Rebellion New York City welcomes Roger Hallam and applauds his efforts in encouraging mass mobilization across the United States. We fully agree that this issue could not be more urgent. Our government, whose job it is to protect all life, has failed in its duty. It has broken the social contract. It is therefore our responsibility to all life to rebel.
About Extinction Rebellion
Time has almost entirely run out to address the ecological crisis which is upon us, including the sixth mass species extinction, global pollution, and abrupt, runaway climate change. Societal collapse and mass death are seen as inevitable by scientists and other credible voices, with human extinction also a possibility, if rapid action is not taken.
Extinction Rebellion believes it is a citizen’s duty to rebel, using peaceful civil disobedience, when faced with criminal inactivity by their Government.
Extinction Rebellion’s key demands are:
Government must tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency, working with other institutions to communicate the urgency for change.
Government must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.
Government must create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.
Government must commit to a just transition in order to maintain a livable, just planet for all.
