With empathy, humility, and frugality, we rebel for all life.
Over-consumption is driving us into an ecological catastrophe. Hundreds of millions of human lives and countless species are in jeopardy. On Black Friday, we will rebel in love and connection, to tell the truth about this crisis and to protect life.
Buy Nothing Day Whirl
Location: Think Coffee @ 568 6th Avenue
Time: 09:45 AM
Join us for an active meditation on the ravages of excess, envisioning the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible.
A whirl is a culture-jamming mindful moving meditation. We push empty shopping carts slowly and silently through the store in a lengthy chain of non-shoppers, weaving through the maze of store aisles.
Outside the shop we will engage in spirited XR outreach, handing out emission-free holiday gift coupons.
After this action, those who want will go together to join the Black Friday Meditation.
Brooklyn Swarming
Location: Columbus Park, by statue of Henry Ward Beecher. Subway stop: Borough Hall
Time: 09:30 AM
Celebrate Buy Nothing Day by swarming the environs of a busy commercial nexus in downtown Brooklyn. Our goal is to call attention to the delivery, sale, and consumption of products that do not price in GHG emissions nor the exploitation and toxic byproducts that are part and parcel of their production. We'll remind consumers how the systems that support our way of life often cause significant and devastating upstream damage to the ecology of this beautiful planet.
This will be an energetic disruption of business as usual.
After this action, those who want will go together to join the Black Friday Meditation.
Black Friday Meditation
Location: New York Public Library @ 5th Avenue and 42nd street
Time: 12:00 PM
We will sit in silence in love and connection, to tell the truth about this crisis and to protect all we hold dear.
We will gather at the New York Public Library at 5th and 42nd at 12:00 pm for a brief centering, ceremony, and group coordination.
Following, we will walk together to Union Square to hold our meditation.
In nonviolent civil disobedience, with fierce compassion, we will stop business as usual to send a clear message: we must act now.
