Join Extinction Rebellion NYC and friends for a birthday celebration at City Hall on the 1st anniversary of NYC’s Declaration of a Climate Emergency.
One year ago, the New York City Council passed a landmark resolution calling for an immediate emergency mobilization to address the climate crisis. This resolution, passed after months of pressure from a coalition of climate organizations, contains a hopeful picture of what a just and sustainable city could look like. It promises climate resilience for vulnerable communities, a swift transition to a renewable energy economy, and the transformation of our food system. But in the year since the resolution passed, the City Council and Mayor’s office have failed to act on their commitments. It’s time to remind the City Council of their promise and demand a just transition to a safe planet for all.
Together, we’ll mark the anniversary of Resolution 864, calling for climate justice. Then, we’ll join the occupation of City Hall (led by VOCAL-NY), which is calling on our government to defund the police and invest in housing, healthcare, social services, and education instead.
We need as much support as we can get on the ground, with marshaling, outreach, and de-escalation. This is a critical moment for us to show up as a community, to listen, to engage in dialogue, to share food, to embody the change we wish to see, to make connections, and forge lasting relationships (and keep each other safe).
Please wear a mask to keep yourself and others safe.
Can’t attend in person? Send a message to the Mayor and your City Council member instead!
