10:30-11:45 An Introduction to Extinction Rebellion:Our Demands, Principles and Discussion
This discussion based session will explore XR NYC’s demands, principles and theories of change. Get the big picture about what XR does, how we carry out actions and why. Whether you are new to XR NYC or been around since the beginning, everyone has something to contribute to the discussion.
12:00-1:00 Join the Rebellion: Finding your Way in the Movement
There are so many ways to get involved in XR NYC! Whether you are interested in organizing, making art, or participating in or supporting actions there is a place for all. We’ll briefly outline different ways to get involved and then allow time for you to connect with representatives of the groups you are interested in. Personal connections are the energy that drives XR NYC, so we hope we can connect you with a person in your area of interest or group.
1:00-2:00 Lunch
Please bring your own lunch and we’ll provide the snacks.
2:00-3:15 NVDA
Nonviolent civil disobedience is a necessary and powerful way to take action to halt the climate emergency. Learn about the role of nonviolent direct action in XR’s theory of change and the ways that XR uses nonviolent tactics in actions around the world. Gain knowledge to help you decide how you want to be part of the action.
If you are interested in demonstrating your non-cooperation with the system, whether by risking arrest or not, this training is an important step.
2:00-3:00 Option 2: De-escalation Training
For those who have previously attended a nonviolent direct action training.
De-escalators and marshals are critical support roles during nonviolent direct actions. If you’ve ever found yourself confronted by angry bystanders, agitated by counter-protestors, or harassed by the police at a protest or action, you know how important it is to have the care and support of your fellow safety team. At this interactive workshop, you will learn practical ways to minimize tension and interference between protestors, police, and bystanders.
3:30-4:15 Radical Organizing: Essential Structures and Process To Get Sh*t Done
Deep societal patterns of dominance, privilege and competition have gotten us into the mess of the climate emergency. How do we practically, efficiently and equitably work together and make decisions without reproducing those patterns? XR NYC’s Self Organizing System helps us get work done through a network of small interconnected groups. Learn about how we use consent based decision making, clearly defined roles and meeting procedures to put care for each other at the center of our work.
4:15-5:15 Connection and Community
Join us for light refreshments and time to get to know one another.
